The Grainger Town Project in Newcastle upon Tyne
This is the winner of a Prize.
The restoration of the historic core and heart of Newcastle upon Tyne to counter urban decay and economic and social decline. It is a testament to the role that a high quality historic environment can play in the life of a city.
The regeneration of the urban environment followed a strategy of grant-aided refurbishments of listed buildings, upgrading of housing in the area, repairing the Grey’s Monument and a co-ordinated approach to street surfaces, lighting and furniture. This resulted in 121 buildings being brought back into use, while retaining their historic and architectural interest.
“For the extraordinary achievement of transforming the historic core of a fine 18th century city and for gaining the cooperation and support of all interested parties ensuring its success.”
